Green Day est un trio de punk rock californien formé en 1989 et composé du guitariste et chanteur Billie Joe Armstrong, du bassiste Mike Dirnt et du batteur Tré Cool. À l'origine, le groupe fait partie de la scène punk à Berkeley en Californie. Ils accumulent les concerts et signent un contrat avec le label indépendant Lookout! Records. Leur deuxieme album Kerplunk attire l'attention, et c'est ainsi qu'ils signent avec le label majeur Reprise Records en 1993. C'est ensuite qu'ils créent l'album Dookie en 1994 qui remporte un immense succès: le groupe devenant ainsi (à l'époque) "le plus grand groupe du monde"[1]. Le groupe, avec d'autres tels que Rancid et The Offspring, est également crédité pour avoir relancé l'intérêt commercial du punk dans le monde entier, influencant des groupes comme Blink-182, Sum 41 et Good Charlotte.[2][3] Le groupe poursuit avec les albums Insomniac, Nimrod et Warning entre 1995 et 2000. Ces albums n'atteignent pas le succès commercial de Dookie, mais se vendent tout de même relativement bien. En 2004, le groupe sort l'album American Idiot, qui devient un succès commercial et critique, popularisant le groupe à une nouvelle génération.[4]

Green Day a vendu plus de 60 millions d'albums dans le monde entier[5], dont 22 millions aux États-Unis[6]. Ils ont aussi récolté de nombreux prix, dont trois Grammy Awards pour Dookie, American Idiot et la chanson Boulevard Of Broken Dreams.
